Interview with CTO Adrian Condon – part one

We sat down with B-Secur’s CTO, Adrian Condon, for our ongoing look at the people behind the B-Secur brand, to gain insight into a day in the life of Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at a scaling tech company. In this first part of the interview Adrian shares his experience working for large corporations and moving to B-Secur and insight on his role as CTO.

Tell us a little more about yourself, Adrian

I am originally from Donegal, in the North West of Ireland, studied in Northern Ireland and now am happily living outside Belfast, married, with three children and two dogs who keep me busy outside of work! I have a keen interest in sport, especially basketball, and really enjoy getting out into the countryside walking and cycling.

Can you tell us more about your professional background?
I have over twenty years experience in technology development and delivery across various industries including automotive, aeronautical, industrial and telecoms. I originally studied Electronic and Computer Engineering at University of Ulster which led me to various Engineering roles focused on Electronic Design and specialising in Signal Integrity and Electromagnetics.

Later on in my career, I took further responsibility for Project Management and Operations to learn more about how all the cogs of a technology company need to come together to ultimately be successful. For the past 5+ years I have led the Technology function of B-Secur, responsible for setting the strategy, delivering our technology products, supporting commercial opportunity and anything else that is required of a scaling company!

You’re one of the original senior team of B-Secur’s current business iteration – what drew you to working for a relatively small and unknown (at the time) start-up?
I had worked in many small to large companies over the years with all the associated experience and learnings and had a very good career path in place. But with B-Secur, I had the opportunity to start something from scratch and build a team to develop and deliver something new to the world that will hopefully make a difference to others. Whilst I had a background in sensing technology and delivery, I had no background in ECG!

I did believe we could meet the challenge of creating a way to detect this incredible signal outside of a controlled environment and that coupled with the passion and vision of my colleagues meant it was a risk worth taking!

Can you tell us about a typical working day and your responsibilities as CTO?
As CTO, I am responsible for the delivery of our current and future technology, as well as supporting other functions in the company as required. A typical working day in my role includes regular contact with my team, meetings with existing/prospective customers or investors and working closely with other teams within the company.

A lot of my time is spent reviewing technical documentation and any relevant material around the markets where our HeartKey® will be used. I review the status of our technology development, roadmaps and support the team where possible with everything they need to deliver – our people are always our priority.

In a fast growing company, communication is key to ensure all team members have the right direction and clarity to enable us to deliver cutting edge technology. I am very fortunate to work with an incredibly talented and skilled group of people, so I can always rely on the team to work as a collective solving any roadblocks that might occur and sticking to the agreed timeframe for deliverables.

Part two of Adrian’s interview will be released next week, keep an eye on our social channels to avoid missing out.
